How to Add Mods to a Starbound Server

Starbound mods add and modify existing features within Starbound. These mods can include changes such as new game mechanics, ships, NPCs, game improvements, and much, much more!

To add Starbound mods on your server, begin by downloading those mods.

You can download mods by following these steps:

  1. Begin by going to the Steam workshop for Starbound.

  2. Locate the mods you wish to download, click on those mods, and then click “Subscribe”.

  3. Once you have subscribed to the mods you would like on your server, go back to your Steam game library and start Starbound.

  4. Once Starbound has fully loaded to the main menu, close Starbound.

This is required to allow the workshop mods to install within your Steam files.

  1. Now, in your computer’s files, go to this location: /Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/211820/

All Starbound workshop mods will be installed at this location in your Steam files. Each folder in that location will be named after the mod ID for the mod you subscribed to.

We will be using the workshop mod Improved Turrets as an example.

  1. In the case of the mod Improved Turrets, the mod ID is 1414322416. Therefore, we will want to click the folder named “1414322416”.

  2. In this folder, you will see a file named “contents.pack”. Right-click and rename this file to the mod ID or mod name. For example, “1414322416.pack” or “ImprovedTurrets.pack” would be fine.

  3. After renaming each mod .pack file, copy the Starbound workshop mod .pack file of each mod you would like to install on your server and paste those mod .pack files at a safe location on your computer.

Once those mod .pack files are downloaded and renamed, you will now need to install those mod files to your Starbound game on your computer. This is required as the mods must be installed on both your Starbound game and your server.

To install mods on your Starbound game, follow these steps:

  1. In your game library on Steam, right-click Starbound and click “Properties”.

  2. In your Starbound properties, click “Local Files” and then “Browse Local Files…”.

This will take you to your Starbound directory in your computer files.

  1. In your Starbound directory, click the folder “mods”.

  2. Proceed to copy all of the mod .pack files you saved in a safe location, and paste those files within the “mods” folder for Starbound.

You have now properly installed those mod .pack files to your Starbound game on your computer! You’re now ready to install those mods on your Starbound server.

To install mods on your Starbound server, follow these steps:

  1. On your Starbound server, click “FTP File Access”. This will open your server’s webFTP.

  2. In your server’s FTP, click “starbound” and then the “mods” folder.

  3. Once you’re in the “mods” folder, click “Upload”.

  4. Go to the location where you saved all of the mod .pack files and drag-and-drop all of those mod files into the “Upload” area of your server’s FTP.

  5. Allow every one of those mod .pack files to upload fully.

  6. Once those files are uploaded, click “X” to exit the “Upload” area and then click “Back to Control Panel” to exit your server’s FTP.

  7. Finally, click “Restart” on your server’s control panel and your Starbound server will now load those mods.

You have now successfully installed Starbound mods to the Starbound game on your computer and to your Starbound server! If you decide to add further mods to your Starbound server, ensure that those mods are installed on both your Starbound game and on your Starbound server.
